The Fatal Frame franchise has historically struggled to find success over in the west, due to its heavy usage of Japanese supernatural horror. It has been a long-running franchise that first debuted on PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2001, with only five titles to its name, with 2014’s Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water being the fifth game in the series. Thanks to hype for this upcoming remaster, series director Makoto Shibata was quite surprised about it considering how previous games were more niche in the west.

In an interview with JPGames, it was pointed out that many Fatal Frame games are niche and nowadays quite rare, which can be a barrier of entry for some fans looking to get into the series. When Shibata was asked about porting or even remastering these rare games, he said that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water’s remaster was made to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the series, so there currently are no plans to develop any other remastered versions. However, he said that thanks to the reception for the upcoming release, it has exceeded their expectations and that he would be taking this into consideration.

A few months ago, the producer of the series was asked a similar question regarding a new Fatal Frame entry, where he was asked that if Maiden of Black Water performed well then it could end up with a revival of the series. While it was no guarantee, he suggests that he would love to take a crack at another game with the team.

Suffice to say, the minds behind the Fatal Frame series wish for these games to reach as many as people as possible, as the game is being released on many different formats and consoles. Hopefully this game and other factors line up correctly for more Fatal Frame games in the future, or even a remastered collection of the previous games.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will release on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on October 28th 2021.
