The Walking Dead premiered on AMC in October 2010. While later seasons arguably did not measure up to the Golden Globe-nominated first season, the series has proven to be lucrative for the network. Fear The Walking Dead was the first spinoff series, followed by World Beyond and Tales of the Walking Dead.

AMC has three additional The Walking Dead spinoffs coming down the line, the first of which will be The Walking Dead: Dead City, which is scheduled to premiere in June 2023. The spinoff stars Lauren Cohan as Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan, who find themselves in post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The series also stars Gaius Charles, Zeljko Ivanek, Karina Ortiz, Jonathan Higginbotham and Mahina Napoleon. Furthermore, the Daryl Dixon spinoff starring Norman Reedus as the titular character is slated to premiere on an unspecified date later in 2023. Lastly, the Rick Grimes and Michonne spinoff starring Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will begin production this year and premiere on AMC in 2024.
Beforehand, Fear The Walking Dead season 8 will conclude the story with two six-episode parts, the first of which premieres on Sunday, May 14, 2023. “This next phase of our beloved Walking Dead franchise promises to engage and enthrall faithful viewers," said Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios at AMC Networks, in a statement, “Fans new and old will love seeing zombies walking across the Brooklyn Bridge, beneath the Eiffel Tower, inside the Louvre, and at dozens more exotic and iconic locations from around the country and world.”
The Walking Dead outlived the zombie craze that helped it achieve success for AMC, and it was arguably a weaker show as it progressed. Still, the ratings were strong enough for AMC to build plans for a Walking Dead universe long before the original series concluded. However, it remains to be seen if audiences will continue to tune in to The Walking Dead spinoffs considering the main series lost a lot of its audience over the year. Of course, die-hard fans remained loyal to the end, so The Walking Dead spinoffs will have a built-in audience that can combat any zombie fatigue.
The Walking Dead is now available on AMC Plus.
